Green research and innovation

Investments in green research and innovation are decisive for the green transition and for Denmark attaining our ambitious objectives in the field of climate change. It is a prerequisite that we develop and implement new technologies and climate solutions to the benefit of climate, environment, and nature.

Speeding up green solutions of the future

In 2024, the government launched the proposal "Speeding up green solutions of the future – Enhanced efforts for green research, innovation, and climate solutions". With this proposal, the government proposes to allocate at least DKK 15 billion for green research and innovation up to 2030. The government will also facilitate the maturing of green technologies and solutions from the laboratory into use in society.

The objective of allocating at least DKK 15 billion for green research, innovation, and climate solutions is part of “Agreements on distribution of research reserves etc. in 2025" from 1 November 2024.

The objective is carried on in ”Agreements on Research and innovation 2026 – 2029”, from which it appears that at least DKK 2.7 billion (2026-pl) should be allocated a year in green research funds in the state research budget up to and including 2030.

Four green research missions

The government will strengthen the following four green research missions: carbon capture, green fuels (PtX), agriculture, and circular economy, with a new approach focusing on speeding up maturing of new technology and new solutions. Barriers such as testing, documentation, or coordination among authorities must be solved simultaneously, whenever possible.
