The Arctic region has in recent years taken up a more predominant position when it comes to geo and security policy.
Arctic research is crucial for our understanding of, among others, climate change, development within geo and security policy, and the cohesion in the Kingdom of Denmark that also covers the Greenlandic and Faroese societies. The Ministry of Higher Education and Science has a number of assignments that relate to Arctic research.
Forum for Arctic Research (FAF) was established in 2013 with the purpose to initiate better coordination and have more benefit from the research activities of the members in the Arctic field. In addition, FAF is to support and work for more and better consistency between the members’ efforts within Arctic research.

Denmark participates in the circumpolar cooperation University of the Arctic (UArctic), an interdisciplinary network of research and education institutions active in the field of education and research in and around the Arctic.
In June 2022, the Greenlandic government Naalakkersuisut and the Danish government agreed that the historical relationship between the two countries should be analysed. The mandate for a historical analysis of the relationship between Greenland and Denmark since 1945 was published in June 2023. In February 2024, the research management was designated jointly by Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Research, Vivian Motzfeldt, and Denmark’s Minister for Higher Education and Science, Christina Egelund.
